A few months ago a friend sent me a link to an article that described a photography project. Eleven photographers photographed the same dress. As you might imagine the results were widely varied and interesting. You can read the article here.
I’d recently purchased an elaborate period gown from a theater costume sale, for $30! Why not use the gown for a series of vintage glamour portrait sessions with different models and different themes? I’d previously photographed my niece Noelle in the gown, in my studio. The photos turned out great but beyond that I had no idea of how I’d use the dress in the future. Here’s where model and gothic anachronist Polaire Woods came in. After getting a relatively brief description of what I wanted to accomplish, she appeared for the session in full period makeup, with historically accurate hair, accessories and even undergarments. Several images from the session have won competitions. What a great start to this creative journey.
You can see more of Polaire’s work on Instagram at Instagram.com/polairewoods/. And stay tuned for “The Dress, Part Two.”
