When a client books a headshot session with me I send a short video on how to prepare from The Prep Room. It covers wardrobe, makeup and offers other guidelines. One tip for women is to wear “jewel toned clothing.” I include a color chart as an example. Quite a few people show up telling me they didn’t have any colorful clothing, and that they went shopping to get one or two bright garments for the session.
Imagine my delight, then, when the lovely Suzanne appeared for her company’s website photo wearing a vibrant blue dress and bringing along a yellow sweater and purple jumpsuit. I was ridiculously excited! After the “official” headshot she agreed to do a few additional poses in front of a bright blue backdrop. As we chatted she shared that she used to do some modeling earlier in her career. Why am I not surprised?
If you are accustomed to wearing black, gray and brown attire, treat yourself to a bright colored shirt, scarf, jacket or tie. You may feel a bit self-conscious for a moment but people react strongly and positively to color. Try it on your next Zoom call and let me know what you think.
